Eligibility criteria for the treatment of migraine headaches are as follows:

  • Chronic persistent unrelenting migraine headaches

  • Migraines occurring more than 15 days per month, AND

  • Migraines that require multiple pain medications for relief

Symptoms of Chronic Migraines

Botox is commonly used for wrinkle reduction as a cosmetic treatment. What you may not know, is that Botox is also FDA and Health Canada approved for and widely used for medical purposes to control muscle spasms and treat certain neurological disorders.

How Botox® for Chronic Migraine Works

For chronic migraines, Botox® is administered through a series of tiny injections with a fine needle into the specific head and neck muscles thought to contribute to headache symptoms.

Botox is injected around pain fibres that are involved in headaches. The botox enters the nerve endings and blocks the release of chemicals involved in pain transmission. Botox prevents migraine headaches before they start.

Relief can begin within days and full improvement is generally seen within two weeks. Treatments must be repeated at three-month intervals to maintain results. Patients acquire maximum effects by the second or third treatment.

BOTOX FOR CHRONIC MIGRAINES

HOW IS BOTOX FOR MIGRAINES ADMINISTERED?

Botox is injected into muscles in 7 different areas of the head and neck that may be contributing to your headaches. Your doctor will determine the number of injections and injection sites required to treat your specific condition. The treatment typically takes 15 minutes. It is recommended that you receive 3 treatments, 3 months apart for maximal results and relief.

IS THIS COVERED BY OHIP OR MY PRIVATE DRUG PLAN?

Your assessment of chronic headaches is covered by OHIP. The Botox medication is usually covered by the majority of private drug plans, and an additional injection fee of $249 is charged to the patient for performing the procedure.

HOW DO I KNOW IF BOTOX IS RIGHT FOR ME?

We recommend you create a headache diary for three months prior to your consultation to track the frequency of your migraines and to bring this with you to your consultation. We will assess and diagnose your headaches and discuss all potential treatment options with you.
